All three of these plateaus were formed during the superplume event in the Cretaceous (see below) during several episodes that individually lasted for only a few million years.

Large igneous provinces (LIP) generated by superplume events apparently occur at irregular inter va ls t hroughout geologic time, a lt hough two large LIP, the Siberian Traps at the Permian / Triassic boundary and the Deccan Traps at the Cretaceous/ Tertiary boundary, are not associated with superplume events.
